Scanimation samples

I created simple Scanimation samples for client from He want something similar to Magic Moving Images book.

I didn't created such illusions before so I try to find some tutorials. It's strange but I didn't find good tutorials about this type of animation. So I try experimenting. 
I created first animation in Flash and then exported to Photoshop. 

But it looks a bit weird as for me. So I created second sample whole in Flash from start to finish.

I found that this type of animation have several important restrictions. 
Size of the mask black lines depend on animation frames. So more frames - wider black lines. You need to find balance.
Size of the animated objects must not be too small. Small symbols can looks not good.
Now I can create in Flash any scanimations with no problem. And it can be exported for print on paper with no problem also.
Maybe will create good tutorial one day :)

Sure it's not good developed but my goal was to test painting workflow more then character development itself. So I am satisfied enough.
I used my old sketches from Coursera project and created detailed grayscale variants and then coloured variants. Looks like I have good and tested workflow for similar projects :)

Test for animation project Terrabyte

I got invitation to design backgrounds for animation project from Russia. Here some test concept sketches I did.
Colored location concept art. Racing building with entrance to racing arena.
Theme is world of small creatures inside Internet web. Similar to but for Internet web only. So I had try to implement computer elements and create digital a bit futuristic atmosphere but not to much futuristic as sci-fi because this is not future but parallel reality.
I started with pen and paper sketch. To be true I do it very rare now, most of my sketches I start on computer. Sure it's crude but can be done and corrected very fast. And one main reason for me to use paper - I can see overall image at once. It's a bit harder on computer screen.

So I did rough location schema in top left conner, then perspective and then side view with all details without distortion.

Then I scan paper sketch and continue in Photoshop. First of all I clean up image. Then create grayscale variant with pen sketch on Multiplay layer.

I paint over grayscale images and create some color variations + created main important patterns for walls and floor. This patterns were inspired by computer circuit board and processor patterns.

Coloring sketches for night scenes

Created series of images for future film. The story is about little boy, his dummy and his mom. They are traveling at night in the forest and meet tigers on big tree. Something like that :)
My goal was to create night scenes in forest with main heroes. So I try to experiment and find needed night light.
First attempts were ugly as hell. I just colored over b/w sketch.
Then I did try different approach. I did scenes in overcast light with natural own colors. And then started experiment with lighting. And it works. Colors are here, light are here and everything looks good together.
So here are screens. Overcast lighting (Before) and then night lighting (After).

And here some images from first series of sketches with last one. They are colored over the same b/w sketches but using different coloring methods.

  • Before method - b/w sketch + coloring on Color layers. Looks dull and weird.
  • After - b/w sketch + overcast coloring on Overlay layer + Main lighting Hue&Saturation layerColor balance layers for different light sources.

Looks a bit complex but it isn't. And you get rich color transitions as bonus! I think it' great.

I continue +Coursera Character design for Video Games course

Assignment #03

Goal: Redesign game character for different game world. 
I tried to redesign two characters.Carmageddon character to Earthworm Jim game world and Max Payne to Mega Turrican world.
  • #01 Earthworm JIm character.
  • #02 redesigned Carmageddon character. I recreate Carmageddon character as worm with Jim's exagerated proportions and cartoon style but with all key details from original Carmageddon character.
  • #03 Mega Turrican character.
  • #04 redesigned Max Payne character. I tried to create typical Max Payne gesture and colours because I can't create small details with limited pixels. And I saved only key details - big black gun and leather jacket.

Coursera. Character design for Video Games. Assignment #02

I continue +Coursera Character design for Video Games course. What can be interesting in one more Character design course? Oh, you never know before start :) This week I visited Andy Ristaino in his studio! If you don't know who is Andy Ristaino he developed characters for Adventure Time and he is really cool dude.
I did my second assignment already.

Assignment #02

Goal: Create 2 different game characters. 
When I say different I mean really different - shapes, style, mood, size.
So I created characters inspired by Mega Turrican game. There are main hero - Bren McGuaire. He is soldier of Freedom Forces. 
And he fighting against The Machine - evil enemy. I try to create opposite characters in size, shape, details and style. So I designed McGuaire from organic, round shapes and The Machine from some abstract triangular shapes and corners.
